One of the most common concerns parents have before a newborn photography session is:
“What if my baby won’t sleep?”
If you’re planning newborn photos, you may have seen beautiful images of peacefully sleeping babies curled up in adorable poses. It is easy to assume that your baby needs to sleep through the entire session for the photos to turn out well.
Fortunately, that’s not the case.
As a newborn photographer in Toronto, I expect babies to wake up, cry, feed, stretch, and need plenty of breaks during a session. A newborn photography session is built around your baby—not the other way around.
Your Baby Doesn’t Have to Sleep the Whole Time
Newborn babies don’t follow a photography schedule.
Even if your baby is sleeping when I arrive, they may wake up as soon as we start taking photos. They may also become hungry, need a diaper change, or simply decide that they would rather look around.
That’s completely normal.
I don’t expect a baby to sleep continuously for two hours. Instead, I work around your baby’s natural rhythm and adjust the session as needed.
Sometimes the best photographs happen when your baby is awake.
An alert newborn looking toward the camera, stretching their arms, opening their eyes, or making a little expression can create beautiful and meaningful photographs that are completely different from traditional sleepy newborn portraits.
What Happens If Your Baby Wakes Up?
Nothing needs to go wrong.
If your baby wakes up during a pose, I can simply pause and give them time to settle. Depending on how your baby is feeling, we may:
- Give your baby a break
- Feed the baby
- Change the diaper
- Swaddle the baby
- Hold and soothe the baby
- Try a different pose
- Take some awake photographs
- Move on to family photographs
There is no need to rush.
The goal of a newborn photography session is not to see how many photographs we can take while your baby is asleep. The goal is to create beautiful photographs while keeping your baby comfortable and the experience relaxed for your family.
Feeding Breaks Are Completely Normal
Newborns often need to eat more frequently than parents expect.
You don’t need to worry about feeding your baby according to the photography session.
If your baby is hungry, we stop.
Whether you are breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, feeding breaks are simply part of working with a newborn. You should never feel that you’re interrupting the session by feeding your baby.
In fact, allowing your baby to become comfortable and satisfied often makes it easier to continue with photographs afterward.
Awake Newborn Photos Can Be Beautiful
Sleepy photographs are popular, but they aren’t the only type of newborn photography.
Some of my favourite newborn images are created when babies are awake.
Your baby’s eyes, tiny facial expressions, fingers, lips, and movements can all become part of the story.
An awake baby may look directly at a parent, look toward the camera, stretch, or simply observe what is happening around them.
These moments can be especially meaningful because they capture your baby’s personality at this very early stage.
What If My Baby Cries?
Crying is also completely normal.
A newborn session can involve some crying. It doesn’t mean that your baby is having a bad session or that the photographs aren’t going well.
When a baby becomes unsettled, I stop and give them time.
Sometimes they simply need to be held. Other times they need to eat, have their diaper changed, or take a short break.
Parents also shouldn’t feel embarrassed if their baby cries during the session. You don’t have to apologize for your baby being a baby.
You Don’t Need to Make Your Baby Sleep Before I Arrive
Some parents try very hard to keep their baby awake before the photographer arrives because they believe this will guarantee better photographs.
I generally recommend keeping things relaxed rather than turning the hours before your session into a mission to make your baby exhausted.
Newborns are unpredictable.
You can follow your normal routine and let your baby sleep, feed, and wake naturally. Once the session begins, we can work with whatever mood your baby happens to be in that day.
Why In-Home Newborn Photography Can Help
One of the advantages of an in-home newborn photography session in Toronto and the GTA is that you don’t have to pack your newborn into the car and travel to a studio.
You can stay in your own environment, with everything your baby needs close by.
During an in-home session, I bring the photography equipment, lighting, backgrounds, and newborn props needed for the session.
You don’t need a large house or a professionally decorated nursery either. A relatively small area can be enough to create beautiful newborn photographs.
What If My Baby Is Wide Awake the Entire Session?
That’s okay too.
Every baby is different.
Some newborns sleep for much of their session. Some sleep for a while and then become alert. Others seem determined to stay awake and see everything that is happening.
If your baby remains awake, we can focus on:
- Natural awake portraits
- Close-up photographs
- Parent and baby photographs
- Family photographs
- Hands and feet
- Facial expressions
- Swaddled portraits
- Lifestyle photographs around your home
The session can be adapted to your baby’s personality.
The Most Important Thing Is Your Baby’s Comfort
A successful newborn photography session isn’t measured by how long your baby sleeps.
Your baby’s comfort comes first.
There is no reason to force a newborn to remain in a particular position simply because it looks good in a photograph. If your baby needs a break, we take a break.
This is particularly important when photographing newborns because they are still developing and require gentle handling throughout the session.
Don’t Wait for a “Perfect” Baby
Your baby doesn’t need to be perfectly sleepy, perfectly settled, or perfectly posed.
Real newborns have tiny scratches, peeling skin, funny expressions, hiccups, movements, and unpredictable moods.
Those details are part of this short stage of your baby’s life.
When you book newborn photography in Toronto, you’re not booking a photoshoot with a baby who has to behave like a model. You’re documenting your baby exactly as they are right now.
And sometimes the photographs you didn’t plan for become the ones you love the most.
